Cwalk
The Crip walk is a gang movement that originated at the start of the 1970s in the neighborhood’s of Compton and evolved to more then just a movement in the late 1990s as a hip-hop inspired dance.
The cwalk is mainly composed of small movements with the feet. However these movements reflected more; they often display loyalty and love towards the gang. It also was used in a wide variation of communication between members and opposing gangs. Its seen in initiations of gang members, warnings to fellow members, and other signals.
The cwalk is most commonly performed to west coast rap, and G-funk. With this music rapper Ice T was able to bring the cwalk mainstream during his concerts in the 80’s. at this time the cwalk was never seen to those outside of its “culture” and through this it was pushed more towards the evolution of a dance move. Other performers like Snoop Dog also started showing off the walk in music videos, and even during the late 90’s rapper Bow Wow a non Crip member started to Crip walk at his shows. Even thought these artists represented the Cwalk as a gang members only dance the movement seemed to spread like wild fire.
After being through generations of growth the cwalk eventually became part of hip-hop and is seen now as a dance. Even other spin offs like the clown walk are started to form.
